Distribute first – a few gentle rotations to level the bed – then flip the tool and tamp straight down.
Does distributing really matter?
Yes. Uneven grounds let water find a fast path through the puck, which is what makes a shot sour and thin.
How deep should the distributor sit?
Just enough to skim and level the surface – it should not compress the puck, that is the tamper's job.
